2022-12-19stdio-common: Convert vfprintf and related functions to buffersFlorian Weimer
vfprintf is entangled with vfwprintf (of course), __printf_fp, __printf_fphex, __vstrfmon_l_internal, and the strfrom family of functions. The latter use the internal snprintf functionality, so vsnprintf is converted as well. The simples conversion is __printf_fphex, followed by __vstrfmon_l_internal and __printf_fp, and finally __vfprintf_internal and __vfwprintf_internal. __vsnprintf_internal and strfrom* are mostly consuming the new interfaces, so they are comparatively simple. __printf_fp is a public symbol, so the FILE *-based interface had to preserved. The __printf_fp rewrite does not change the actual binary-to-decimal conversion algorithm, and digits are still not emitted directly to the target buffer. However, the staging buffer now uses bytes instead of wide characters, and one buffer copy is eliminated. The changes are at least performance-neutral in my testing. Floating point printing and snprintf improved measurably, so that this Lua script for i=1,5000000 do print(i, i * math.pi) end runs about 5% faster for me. To preserve fprintf performance for a simple "%d" format, this commit has some logic changes under LABEL (unsigned_number) to avoid additional function calls. There are certainly some very easy performance improvements here: binary, octal and hexadecimal formatting can easily avoid the temporary work buffer (the number of digits can be computed ahead-of-time using one of the __builtin_clz* built-ins). Decimal formatting can use a specialized version of _itoa_word for base 10. The existing (inconsistent) width handling between strfmon and printf is preserved here. __print_fp_buffer_1 would have to use __translated_number_width to achieve ISO conformance for printf. Test expectations in libio/tst-vtables-common.c are adjusted because the internal staging buffer merges all virtual function calls into one. In general, stack buffer usage is greatly reduced, particularly for unbuffered input streams. __printf_fp can still use a large buffer in binary128 mode for %g, though. 2021-09-03Remove "Contributed by" linesSiddhesh Poyarekar
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012 in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect reality in those cases. Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by, etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a courtesy to the earlier developers. The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. 2020-07-09Fix memory leak in __printf_fp_l (bug 26215).Joseph Myers
__printf_fp_l has a memory leak in the case of some I/O errors, where both buffer and wbuffer have been malloced but the handling of I/O errors only frees wbuffer. This patch fixes this by moving the declaration of buffer to an outer scope and ensuring that it is freed when wbuffer is freed. Tested for x86_64 and x86.
2020-07-09Fix double free in __printf_fp_l (bug 26214).Joseph Myers
__printf_fp_l has a double free bug in the case where it allocates memory with malloc internally, then has an I/O error while outputting trailing padding and tries to free that already-freed memory when the error occurs. This patch fixes this by setting the relevant pointer to NULL after the first free (the only free of this pointer that isn't immediately followed by returning from the function). Tested for x86_64 and x86.

2019-02-22Break some lines before not after operators.Joseph Myers
The GNU Coding Standards specify that line breaks in expressions should go before an operator, not after one. This patch fixes various code to do this. It only changes code that appears to be mostly following GNU style anyway, not files and directories with substantially different formatting. It is not exhaustive even for files using GNU style (for example, changes to sysdeps files are deferred for subsequent cleanups). Some files changed are shared with gnulib, but most are specific to glibc. Changes were made manually, with places to change found by grep (so some cases, e.g. where the operator was followed by a comment at end of line, are particularly liable to have been missed by grep, but I did include cases where the operator was followed by backslash-newline). This patch generally does not attempt to address other coding style issues in the expressions changed (for example, missing spaces before '(', or lack of parentheses to ensure indentation of continuation lines properly reflects operator precedence). sys/cdefs.h has a macro __long_double_t used in two places in glibc. long double is a standard part of C since C89; there is no need for such an alias for it. This patch removes that macro and uses long double directly everywhere. As an implementation-namespace, undocumented symbol, it should not be considered part of the API for users, and codesearch.debian.net shows no sign of it being used outside glibc in a way that would break with this patch. In __printf_fp_l, __printf_fphex, and __printf_size the blocks of code that are used to read a double or long double argument, check for special values and convert to multiprecision are similar. When adding float128 support to libc, more code would be duplicated to deal with the extra type. This patch moves the repetitive code to a macro which is now used by double and long double and will be used for float128 when support is added, thus avoiding more duplication. This changes the few places in generic code that use it. * stdio-common/printf_size.c (__printf_size): Don't use union ieee854_long_double in fpnum union. * stdio-common/printf_fphex.c (__printf_fphex): Likewise.
